Hi, a local runner on the trails in North Park here. Just a reminder, please ask all riders to yell when they come upon a runner to notify them, as well as tell the person how many bikers in your group. This helps avoid accidents, especially in the full foilage times!

Your very welcome. You got most of it but those last 4 miles are pretty sweet. Basically you climb up and do the swimming pool loop it pretty much parallels South Ridge Drive, then cross Babcock at West Ridge Road and take the Koto Buki trail back down to where you began. If you get another chance at it the swimming pool loop makes a great starting point. Also the skills park and the free ride trail is up there and worth at least taking a look at. Glad to hear you had fun!

Just picked up a Gary Fisher Cobia 29er yesterday and have never rode a single track in my life (I'm 40). Two friends and I rode this trail system while it was super muddy and cold - it was amazing. What an induction to MTB! After 5 miles+ I did not want to stop. I can see this being my sport of choice. I live only 10min away and have found my spring summer activity. Can't wait to explore more and interested in seeing how the trail reacts when it is dry.

Hartwood doesn't drain well so this time of year your ride can get pretty messy. Is it still the best? With the new trails and the blazing project North Park gives Hartwood a run for it. It's hard to compare, North Park there's a lot more miles you can put together an epic loop out there. Hartwood is still more interesting. Apollo, Moraine, Bavington these are all quality, it's hard to choose just one.

Racoon State Park, I beleive for the most part it is closed to mountain biking but I really don't know for sure. I heard some of the double track trails may be open to biking but I'm not certain on any of that. There was some discussion about it on the PORC message boards a while back:

Go for it! Have fun! My fastest time on that loop was a blazing 1:46 which includes four minutes of stopping. Avg MPH was 9.9 - 10.2 while actually riding. That was on my Gary Fisher HiFi 29er (Full suspension cross country bike). I think I could have gotten up the climbs a lot faster on a hard tail, especially the short ones, I hit them pretty hard and I could have done without all the rear suspension power suck. I'd have to say a hard tail 26" is the better bike in North Park. Theres a lot of fast tight turns and navigating with those big wheels slows me down.

Solid, Solid set of trails. The six mile loop described above will keep you coming back. I rode today and there was no one there except a hot chick and her boyfriend. The hot chick was faster than me and her guy. Fun, fun ride. May go back tomorrow!

Roaring Run is great I live 10 minutes from there riding time, but I'm 16 without my license yet, so I'm proud to know that one of the best riding spots is that close to me, but I can't wait to try some others.

Naw it's all good. I actually had a great time even if I missed the last climb. Seen a lot of people I knew from the mountain bike races but there was a whole huge group of new faces (new to me), roadies I'd assume. Was awesome to see that many hard core cyclist gathered together. 180 of us ripping through the city like we were the tour or something. Good times!
